Royal Society of Marine Artists Exhibition

On the way to London for the opening

Train to London for the opening.

So!… the day finally arrived for me to travel to London for the official opening of The 50th Anniversary Exhibition of the Royal Society of Marine Artists in the stunning ‘Mall Galleries’ and despite a long train diversion, I just about made it in time for the evening Reception. This is the first chance to see the exhibition for Members and Friends of the Society and Exhibiting Artists at a special Reception and a ‘Preview’, held the night before the ‘Private View’. Canapés and wine were served while a talented pair from the Royal College of Music entertained.

I hadn’t laid eyes on my painting it since it was submitted to the selection process in July, so it was especially exciting to see ‘I’m Blown Away’  hung in this wonderful huge gallery alongside some of the country’s best marine artists. All the paintings have to have a connection to the sea, other than that the range of subject matter was extremely varied.

On Tuesday morning I managed to squeeze in a short visit to the National Gallery which is very close by, in Trafalgar Square. Then at 11am there was a tour of the RSMA exhibition with the current President, Elizabeth Smith, who kindly pointed out my painting and said “it really expresses the power of the sea”.  After the tour, I spent time meeting other artists and having a really good look at all the fabulous work on display.  In the afternoon there were speeches and award ceremony and all to soon it was time for my train home to Wales. It all went by in a whirl, but I met some lovely people and saw a lot of great paintings as all the work that makes it into this prestigious exhibition is of an extremely high standard.

Mall Galleries are located in a beautiful Palladian building in ‘The Mall’, SW1  Which (appropriately for the RSMA!), is just next to ‘Admiralty Arch’.  If you’d like to visit the Exhibition it is open daily until 8th October 2016. Admission is £3 for adults.
